In 2007, the Florida Legislature directed the MRMCC to prepare a report concerning the potential expansion of the Florida Wild and Scenic River Designation. The Final Report that was submitted to the Governor and Legislature is available for download (click here.)

Myakka Wild and Scenic River Management Plan

The Myakka River Management Coordinating Council (Council) was established in 1985, by the Myakka River Wild and Scenic Designation and Preservation Act (Section 258.501, Florida Statutes) (Designation Act) to provide interagency and intergovernmental coordination in the management of the river. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Department) appoints new members to the Council. Council membership includes staff of state agencies, local governments, regional planning councils, agricultural interests, environmental organizations, landowners, businesses, and other stakeholders as deemed advisable by the Department.

The Council holds three meetings per year to review and make recommendations on all proposals for amendments to the Designation Act, Myakka Wild and Scenic River Management Plan, Chapter 62D-15, Florida Administrative Code, Myakka River Wild and Scenic River Rule (Rule), as well as on other matters which may be brought before the Council by the Department, any local government, or any member of the Council. The Council can then render its non-binding advisory opinion to the Southwest Florida Water Management District, the Department, and affected local governments.

The Council has adopted Bylaws that set out the procedures for the conduction of its business.
